[Sent by Tom Kohl] To all Club Directors and Tournament Directors Tournament teams affected by weather conditions There is not an OVR related policy or position on tournaments or teams affected by weather conditions. It is up to the Tournament Director to decide to cancel or not to cancel a tournament because of weather related conditions. It is up to the Club Director or coach to decide whether to attend or not attend a tournament because of weather related conditions. If a decision needs to be made by a Club Director or coach, it is my opinion, that Club Directors and coaches should make a decision based on what is best for the safety of the athletes, coaches and parents. Current OVR policy is as follows: If a Tournament Director cancels a tournament, then refunds are due to those teams that are entered. If a team chooses to not attend a tournament and that tournament is conducted then that team loses its entry fee. Tom Kohl OVR Junior Tournament Director January 12, 2008 [Sent by Tom Kohl from the OVR List of Juniors' Clubs and Teams] Per OVR policy concerning coolers and food Keep all coolers in cars. Coolers are prohibited in and outside facilities hosting OVR-sanctioned events. Setting up tables and/or cooking by teams or their support staff, fans, coaches, or parents are prohibited at OVR-sanctioned events. Tournament directors and site managers do not have the discretion to grant permission. If a club does not comply amicably with a tournament director’s or site director’s request, an Incident Report will be sent to Bob Price, OVR Commissioner, resulting in up to a $250 fine and a team/club suspension.
[Sent by Don Burroughs from the OVR List of Juniors' Clubs and Teams] HP tryouts for girls born in/after 1988 will be held Friday, April 8 at the Columbus Convention Center from 6:30pm-9:30pm. Registration and tryout fee must be received by Saturday, March 26 (Postmark at least by Wednesday, March 23. OVR HP Webpage: http://www.ovr.org/juniors/hp/index.php PROGRAM OVERVIEW ---------------- As we enter our 6th year, we've experienced a tremendous amount of success helping players move up to higher levels of play as each year a number of our athletes are making national team rosters for USA Volleyball. This is due mainly to the high level of coaching that OVR clubs are providing these players. Our purpose as a regional HP program is to identify, further train and prepare OVR top players for participation on our national teams, whether it be Youth, Junior or Women's National Teams. TRYOUTS ------- Last year we had over 140 players attend the regional tryouts for the HPC and Youth divisions. We hope for the same this year! Each tryout participant will receive a numbered t-shirt and an evaluation of their tryout performance. Tryout Date: Friday, April 8, 2005 Tryout Location: Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, OH Tryout Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm * APPLICATIONS/FEES MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE MONDAY, MARCH 28, 2005 * TRYOUT HELP NEEDED! ------------------- In order to properly evaluate every player in a fair and consistent manner, we need a lot of help! Specifically, we need at least 2 high-level coaches per court who can fairly and accurately rate each athlete they see based upon predetermined criteria. We also need about 4 coaches per court who are athletic and physically capable of hitting balls accurately at players as well as effectivelly run drills. All tryout coaches MUST be at least IMPACT certified to participate. If you are interested, please contact me ASAP! TEAMS ----- This year, we will have 1 HPC team and 1 Youth team. The age definition for these teams are as follows: * HPC Team: Born in/after 1990 * Youth Team: Born in/after 1988 or 1989 These age limits are determined by USA Volleyball and cannot be changed by regional programs. There will be 12 players selected for each team. In order to be selected, players MUST attend the tryout. COACHES ------- The coaches that will be working with this year's teams will be teaching players the skills and techniques used in the national team programs. Selected coaches have proven success at the club, high school and/or college level. Head coaches must be USA Volleyball CAP Level II certified and Assistant coaches must be USA Volleyball CAP Level I certified. In addition, selected coaches have demonstrated a committment to OVR athletes and are donating several weeks of their summer to be involved in this program. Head and Assistant coaches will be announced at a later date. TRAINING CAMP ------------- This year's training camp will be July 11-15, 2005 at a college campus site to be announced at a later date. This year we would like to offer a Coaches' Clinic on Thursday, July 14, wherein you will be able to see first-hand the training and methodologies used in our region program. We will also welcome region coaches to watch/help will practice sessions during the training camp on any day. USAV HIGH PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS ----------------------------------- Both the HPC and Youth teams will be participating in the 2005 USAV High Performance Championships to be held in Austin, Texas. Tournament dates are July 19-24, 2005. Logistically, July 19 and July 24 are both travel days with the tournament actually taking place July 20-23. OVR will provide transportation for the teams and coaching staffs to and from this event as well as during the tournament. WHAT DO I DO IF I'M SELECTED TO BE ON THE TEAM? ----------------------------------------------- Players chosen to be a part of this summer's HP program will pay a participation fee of $500. This fee covers the following: * All training camp room/board expenses July 11-15 * All airfare expenses to/from Austin, TX * All hotel expenses at tournament in Austin, TX (food not included) * All uniform (Kaepa) expenses which include a travel bag, shoes, knee pads, warm-up suit, 2 jerseys, socks, and 2 pair of shorts. CONTACT INFO ------------ If you or anyone in your club have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your support of our region programs! OVR High Performance Programs Don Burroughs, Director 426 South Walnut Street New Bremen, OH 45869 419-629-8103 burroughs@ovr.org FROM 2004 [Sent by Tom Kohl] Tournaments are beginning and two major problems that occur every year, adult behavior and food, are appearing again. Please read the memo below issued last year. At your coach's meeting, it is recommended, give each coach a copy of the memo below or post this memo in plain view of the participants and spectators. Those coaches are responsible for their team’s parents and athletes behaviors. To: Club Directors, Tournament Directors RE: Letter from Ron Wyzynski, OVR Executive Director/CEO As you read the information below, keep in mind, that there is a $250 fine and a team/club suspension for the actions described below. Ideally, steps taken by both Club Directors and Tournament Directors will prevent many of the problems described below. Club Directors need to educate and describe the expected behaviors they want from their parents, coaches and athletes. At the coaches meeting, prior to the beginning of pool play, Tournament Directors should describe the ground rules and desired behaviors expected from coaches, players and other guests. Your cooperation is appreciated. Tom Kohl Junior Tournament Director Directors get this out to your parents and players. Please feel free to print copies or e-mail everyone in your club or on your team. Topic: #1 Facility Usage: The trash problem, cooking and vandalism in restrooms stops now. From this point on it's not OK and definitely not acceptable anywhere for any reason. We've handled too many of these situations last season to have a debate. I expect Tournament Directors to report any individual or club misuse of their rental facility to the region office. If a violation occurs then the individual, team or club will face a fine, suspension or both. The region has lost the use of facilities because of parents or players blatantly ignoring the site rules and regulations. Topic #2 Coaches : The region encourages a positive atmosphere at every event. Teams will win and lose and officials do make mistakes, but so do players, coaches and support crews of junior players. Think about why you're at the event and set positive goals. Topic #3 Parents: God knows that our junior players, clubs and teams couldn't do it without your support. Please keep those comfortable (all day) folding chairs back away from the court so players have room to scramble after an errant pass. The region had two serious injury claims last season because of juniors crashing into or tangled in low profile chairs. Just like the coaches be positive with your comments to the players, officiating crew and officials. Your example will go a long way. The OVR is the largest of the 39 volleyball regions in the United States but I'd give that accomplishment up if we could be the best. Together let's fix the problems before they start. Have a great volleyball season. Sincerely, Ronald J.
